Course of action

Updated: Mar 7, 2021

Last November I started the Writing and Illustrating a Children’s Picture Book course by Curtis Brown Creative.

I wanted to fill the gaps in my knowledge of creating picture books and the publishing industry but found that I got so much more from it!

The course modules were presented by Sarah McIntyre and David O’Connell who made the material easy to follow and inspiring. Assignments were uploaded to a forum made up of the other writers/illustrators on the course and the author/illustrator tutor assessing them - Matt Robertson, as well as some of the team from Curtis Brown Creative.

The forum was a really helpful, supportive place to post my work, scribbles, sketches and stories knowing that I’d get interesting ideas and constructive criticism as feedback.

The writers/illustrators from the forum group I took the course with have kept in touch via Slack which is one of the best things I didn’t know I’d get out of the course.

Overall I’m so happy I decided to go ahead with it and incredibly grateful to have a resource of talented writers/illustrators I can catch up with and be inspired by.
